neko’s labo: Messing with Vocaloid2 (1)
nekosasu | August 31, 2009 | 7:35 amI’ve been toying around with this software intermittently, because my ADHD in denial never really allowed me to leave this program open for more than one hour. Eventually, I forgot about it. But now that I’m loving a couple of songs too much (guess which series… Ar Tonelico, of course…), I felt like going one step forward and start singing the songs myself… Through Vocaloid. >_> No worries, you won’t hear me sing here any time soon.
Of course, this is very basic stuff. Listen in to the song, select the notes, add the lyrics, and hope for the best. I could start arguing that trying to find out which note is being sung by whom can be a very difficult task at times, but I’d be underrating my listening skills. I haven’t got that mystic “zettai onkan”, but I’m not tone-deaf either ;)
All the more basic is the fact that I haven’t messed with the voice properties much (except of defaulting the vibrato to none), so the voices do sound very robotic still. I hope to find some more time (it’s 4:56 AM now my ass! It’s 8:35 AM now, wtf) later today/in the week to fix those. Same goes for the volume, which I very sparsely fixed on random placed in Audition. Furthermore, the embellishing effects like echo/reverb and shit are not added yet… So… it’s still a long road to perfection… even though I’m not really aiming for perfection. I just want it to sound acceptable ^^;
I would have done this later though, but prodded by a couple of tweets, I felt like sharing this little WIP early. It’s also a nifty compensation (or excuse) for not having watched Canyaan today. :V
So here it is, hope this plugin works. Else, grab the mp3 from here. By the way! It’s EXEC_PHANTASMAGORIA/. from Ar Tonelico. I simply adore this song!
Eh? Apparently it’s Miku-tan’s bday today. It’s going to sound weird, but I really didn’t know that until I got these tweets a couple of hours ago. It’s indeed just a COINCIDENCE! …and even if it wasn’t, this would definitely not have been a suitable tribute for her anyway.
In any case, I hope you enjoyed this song/filler post. I probably will do more of this stuff if I don’t lose patience before. And someday, why not, create songs myself? Although I have little to no creativity at all… :(

Bravo sir, well done and it seems like messing around with Vocaloid software could be interesting…
Ar Tonelico – Aurica and Shurelia ftw!
But 8:35 AM? Pulled an all-nighter to work on it? >_<
Hey it’s actually not bad, but really good for a first try! GJ!
So I’m assuming there’s some sort of arrange window with multiple tracks so you could, if desired, arrange an entire Miku choir in a single song? Interesting…
@Will: Thanks! :D
@lelangir: Yeah, it’s pretty simple in fact. You can have up to… err, forgot. Wasn’t it 12 simultaneous tracks? And with Miku and Rin you have two good voices to play with. (Too bad I don’t have Ruka yet… would have been perfect for this trio in Phantasmagoria.)
Not bad. I want to learn a bit more about music theory before looking into composing anything, Vocaloid or not, but it’s on my long-term to-do list. If you’re feeling up to it, you can try writing something original and asking for feedback here.
If I didn’t hate Miku’s voice so much, I’d probably turn this comment into something that’d be so long that even I wouldn’t read it. This is a good first attempt, and I’m looking forward to a more perfected version (because I love Phantasmagoria, not Miku).
… I wonder how Rin and Ruka sound. I’d never listened to anything with their voice. All I know is that I love Ruka’s appearance, and she is my theme for my DS. I hope her voice is as good as her appearance. Rin can burn in Hell along with Miku.
ANTI-LOLI RINNE, OUT.
Sounds like a good start and needs a bit of tuning here and there. I put a lot of time playing with VOCALOID for a couple of days too (after exams :P). The volume is kinda off I agree…
Rin is hard to tune. I have heard really good Rin songs though, so it is possible. Miku seems to have a softer voice balanced across the notes so it doesn’t as awkward.
Awesome job on the multiple voices so far.
So… Maybe play with the breath and dynamics and you should be set…
Allnighter, kind of, yea…. Well I had it half done when I started tweaking it again at… 2 AM? And once I started, I couldn’t stop. xD
In fact, I haven’t even counted how long it took me… probably 12 hours in whole, or so… probably gonna take the same amount for further editing and stuff. ^^;
I’m glad you liked it, thanks! AURICA FTW <3
By the way! lelangir made the 1000th comment on this blog, grats :D
(Not that impressive, considering that about one third of the comments are by me… but still ^^)
Yeah, that’s one approach. But it will take a long time… Well, another one would be to just do the music you really like… but once again, I have no creativity what so ever, for the time being. (Even though I played 5 years of piano, and 3 years of e-guitar.) On my guitar, I keep just playing stuff I know, instead of adventuring myself into orgasmic riffs out of my mind…
However I’m sure I will create something, someday. And then I will take you up on your offer. :D
…says the lolicon in denialI-I mean, t-thanks!Rin sounds definitely weirder than Miku, that’s for sure. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Ruka (Why can’t we just call her Luca… you know :3) but yeah, I’d want to make her sing too. I don’t even want to know why you only like Ruka – well actually I already know why. I suppose you still want to keep your face, so you pretend you don’t like Miku and Rin… I know EVERYTHING about you.
You lolicon in denialWHAT =(
Anyways, I agree. It definitely needs to be Luca.
And I’m definitely not a/an LID. Or a lolicon. I will storm Europe and slap Vivio, Freykling, AND you. Prepare to intercept my empty threat!
